Physical security crossover

Find the right safe for what you're actually protecting.

Most safe purchases go wrong because the buyer matches the safe to the budget instead of to the threat. We'll walk you through fire rating, burglary rating, size, and placement — then route you to a vetted dealer for delivery and installation.

The curated collection

Ten safes, ten buyer types — cross-checked against what actually sells.

These are the intersection of Dexter's Best's showroom floor and the 2025/26 market's proven sellers — one honest pick per need, from bedside quick-access to TL-15 vault-grade. 🇺🇸 Nearly all US-made — and since the 2025 steel tariffs, American-built safes win on price too, not just build quality. Prices shown are base configurations; colors, lock type, and interior are configured with Dexter's during your quote.

The ratings ladder — burglary

Every safe on this page sits somewhere on this ladder. Climb it until your threat model is covered.

Two rating systems exist: insurance classifications (based on steel thickness alone — nobody attacks the safe) and UL performance ratings (a Underwriters Laboratories crew physically attacks the safe with tools and the clock only runs while a tool touches steel — "net working time"). The UL label is the one that means something.

B / C / E Insurance grade — NOT tested Construction thickness only (B: body under ½", door under 1" … E: body 1"+). Nobody has ever attacked one of these to earn the letter.
RSC Level 1 UL 1037 — tested Survives 5 minutes of attack by one person with hand tools — prying, punching, drilling, tampering. The minimum rating worth buying; most residential gun safes live here.
RSC Level 2–3 UL 1037 — tested Two attackers, more tools, 10 minutes (Level 3 attacks every surface, not just the door).
TL-15 UL 687 — commercial grade (insurance "ER") 15 minutes of net-working-time attack on the door with hand and power tools, drills, and picking devices. Typically composite-lined (steel + concrete) — this is where insurers and jewelers start nodding. Our pick: the AMSEC CEV2518.
TL-30 UL 687 (insurance "F") Same test, 30 minutes. Our pick: the AMSEC CF5524.
TL-30x6 → TRTL → TXTL UL 687 — vault territory The x6 means all six sides get attacked, including the floor — plus grinders and peeling. TRTL adds torches; TXTL-60x6 adds explosives. Beyond this is a bank vault — for these, take the custom-vault path in the calculator.

The ratings ladder — fire

Fire ratings are separate from burglary ratings: how long the interior stays under ~350°F (paper chars around 425°F) while the outside sits in furnace conditions. Real UL fire ratings come in 30-minute, 1-hour, 2-hour, and 4-hour tiers — and a certified safe also survives an explosion test (heated to 2,000°F and checked for rupture) and a drop test (heated, then dropped 30 feet — a burning house's floor giving way). That's why the Gardall UL 2-hour document safe above is a different animal from a big-box "fireproof" cabinet.

A note on marketing claims

Many budget "gun safes" carry no UL certification at all — "fireproof" or "burglar-resistant" without a UL or ETL certification label is marketing, not engineering. Look for the actual label on the door. Our calculator and curated picks only carry verified ratings.

Choosing a lock — the one decision left for your quote

Most safes here fit either lock. Certifications matter more than folklore.

A common myth says mechanical dials are foolproof — in practice Dexter's sees similarly low failure rates on both types. What matters is the lock's certification and build (Sargent & Greenleaf, Securam, AMSEC — not bargain hardware).

Mechanical dial UL Group 2 High Security

Zero electronics, zero battery — leave it ten years and it opens exactly the same. The privacy-maximalist choice (nothing to firmware-update, no code on file anywhere). Trade-offs: 15–20 seconds to open when you're practiced (minutes when you're not), and combination changes need a safe technician. About 10% of what Dexter's sells.

Electronic keypad UL Group 1 High Security

The higher certification, because a timeout limits how many codes can be tried per day. Seconds to open, change your own 6-digit code anytime, options for fingerprint entry, multiple revocable user codes, and hybrid mechanical-retraction models. Runs on a 9V battery accessible from outside (lasts years, like a smoke detector). About 90% of what Dexter's sells.

Both fit the macro-config rule: pick the safe here, pick the lock with Dexter's during the quote. Privacy-minded and buying Liberty? This is where you specify the mechanical dial.
